Surviving Medical School: Tips & Tricks

"Hi, l'm a first year medical student in IPTA. Previously, I was so eager and excited to enter this medical field but now I'm always questioning and doubting myself - Am I strong enough to keep moving forward? I love what l'm doing and studying but somehow the feeling of not being prepared enough or as simply as not being able to answer the lecturer's question always haunt me. Hence, would you please share on how you cope with this situation during your medical school years? Sorry for taking your time and I would be really grateful for your response. Thank you."

Someone actually asked me for advice? I'm totally floored!

Before I give you my unsolicited advice on how to survive medical school and cope with the stress, let me tell you a bit of my background:

  • I did my two-year A-level program in order to enter uni and my results are not great: AABC. The uni asked for at least AAAB. I still got accepted, but I felt I was not qualified enough to do medicine.
  • Failed my first year final exam in Newcastle and was told to repeat the whole year again.
  • Decided to repeat first year in Malaysia campus to avoid humiliation and to start fresh and anew
  • Almost failed my third year - had to resit an OSCE exam
  • My results are just borderline-pass every year with no distinction or merit at all.
  • Had a major breakdown during final year final exam that I can still remember until now

So despite knowing that, if you still want to know how I did it, I would strongly suggest that after you read my answers, it is better for you guys to ask other people who fared better at medical school on better tips on how to survive the medical school. Also, different people have different studying methods, and ultimately, there are various coping strategies that you can use.

1. Know what type of learner you are.

This is a simple thing to discover yet its importance is something you cannot neglect. Simply put, knowing what type of a learner you are can make your study more effective because you will know which study method is best for you and which method that you need to avoid doing. A short googling led me to this infographic:

This four types of learner can also be further classified whether you are a social or solitary type. A social learner studies best in a group while solitary learner needs to be alone to study.

For me, I can say that I am 80% read/write and 20% kinesthetic solitary learner. Once I resigned to the fact that I literally had to WRITE every single thing that I wanted to learn, the next part is to get organized. I had to find the suitable notebooks, the best coloured pen markers, the sticky notes, etc. I ended up with people borrowing my notes because I had to make my notes easy for me to read and understand (because I am slow to absorb things) and they also found my notes super readable. I am very bad at aural (listening) and visual learning types as I easily will forget what I've heard and just seeing the visuals will not make me understand as much as when I'm reading.

However, you have to compromise a bit in medical school. For OSCE and practical exams (viva, etc.) a read/write learner like me will definitely fail the assessment if I stick to just read and write. During my final year exam, I'd proposed to my group study (again, I had to compromise my solitary way) that we practiced answering to these practical exam out aloud to each other. We had compiled the whole list of different diagnoses that can come out and we just fire away with the following differentials, investigations and management. By practicing speaking it out loud, you can gain confidence and the first startled block that you always get when being asked a question can be remedied.

2. Know your academic learning outcomes.

In every module or subject, check with your academic faculty on the learning objectives or outcomes. Essentially, these are the topics that you are expected to understand and be tested on. They will not usually test students with questions outside the learning outcomes.

Make a list of those learning outcomes in bullet points and paste it on your wall. That way you will be constantly reminded of the topics that you have mastered and which one you haven't grasp the concepts yet. If your semester doesn't have any learning outcomes (which I greatly doubt it), make a list of the lecture topics. That way you can keep track of every topic of the lectures that are scheduled for the whole semester.

You know the transparent plastic sheet that we use to cover our textbooks? I bought rolls of them and I spread it all out onto my walls, sticking them up on the wall with tapes on all corners where now I can write my whole academic year's outcome using a whiteboard marker. People who came into my room would usually stopped and stare at my walls because my room will be covered with a lot of notes and list. They usually will spot me standing in the middle of room, lost in thoughts as I gazed at them every day, trying to think on which topics that I need to brush up on.

It seemed like an eternity to me but I did it for the 5 years of medical school in Johor and it worked for me. Unfortunately I couldn't provide a photo of my room back then to show here as proof. The next advice however, I do have pictures about it and it is about -

3. Plan your study time EARLY.

You know how people often say, 'failing to plan is planning to fail.' It's kinda true, but not true enough. It should be, 'failing to plan early is planning to fail.' Every semester the faculty should have released the date for your exams, so take note of those dates on your very first day of the semester. Mark it on your calendar (again, paste your calendar on the wall!) as a reminder.

See how early I planned for my final year exam? 15 weeks in advance!

Once the dates for the exams are fast approaching, the study plan should be revised and be more detailed. This is my finalized study plan for my exam in fourth year of medical school. I had divided my study week to three components in a day (morning, evening, night time) - writing notes for the last few topics of the semester (the green colour blocks), doing exercises (pink blocks), and revising the rest of the topics (yellow blocks). You have to discipline yourself and stick with the timetable schedule.

The big advantage of doing a timetable is this allows you to visualize how much time you need to study in order to cover ALL the topics required before your exams. It also allow you to judge whether you have put enough effort into doing exercises (like past-year questions or bank questions test from books) and revisiting topics you have learnt way back during the early part of the semester.

4. De-stress

A lot of people have a lot of de-stress skills as a way to release the knots of tension in the brain and in the heart. Some people went off jalan-jalan or makan-makan or tengok wayang. Others invest in unhealthier ways like smoking, drinking, partying, and even on drugs (don't be surprised, guys. We are all 50 shades of unlicensed medical professionals here). The main point here is that you have to find a way to de-stress yourself before you feel the burn out or a melt down.

(Aku tengok dia de-stress aku pulak yang stress)

Join the usrahs or a Brazilian jiu jitsu class. Go out and play sports with your friends. You have to do something other than studying medics. God forbid because this is the only time to do so I tell you. Once you became a doctor, you have to be realllllyyyy dedicated to spend your time not sleeping from exhaustion to do things you used to do when you were at school. I wouldn't say it is impossible to do, in fact there's a colleague I know who is deep with cycling, another is with mountain climbing. Me? I'm active in swimming in the bed sleeping HAHAHAH, usually with a PS4 controller in one hand and a McD's triple cheeseburger in another hand. The only constant de-stress way of mechanism for me is here, blogging things away. So find your de-stress mechanism of skill, and then return to study.

5. Reflect and repair

The last bit of advice is regarding how to manage when you have a particular bad day (or a series of days, I know it can get worse sometimes). Studying medicine is like a wheel of fortune - some days you feel invigorated and full of optimism. Some other days you will feel dejected and questioning why the heck you are doing medicine in the first place. That is how life of a doctor is but at the end of the day, you have to think long and hard about your decisions.

Nobody likes it when they couldn't get the answers right or when being scolded for the mistakes made. The point that I always make and bear in mind is that I'm here to learn. If scoldings and humiliation are the ways to get it, that's what I will endure. YES, IT DOESN'T FEEL GOOD, but let the nawaitu of your action, which is to gain knowledge and know things, be the better person. Whenever you get scolded for not knowing things or getting it wrong, think, "Okay, I don't know about this topic. This is important. One day I would need to know about this and when I don't know  things could get a lot worse than just a scolding,".

Write down all the things you couldn't get it right when being asked and look it up when you reached home. It's not easy to force yourself to have a positive mind set, but by slowly reading back on things you don't know you are in a way repairing your foundation. Let it go that you can't answer the question back then. The more important point is that after you reflect and repair, can you answer the question now?

One thing to remember is that different people learn at different times. Person A might know about that topic now and you don't, but it doesn't mean that you will never learn about that topic indefinitely. You might know some other topic ahead of the time that other people haven't learn yet. That's why don't be too disheartened about it. Learn all you can in the best way you can. Medicine is for life, so like I mentioned earlier, if you managed to cover all your topics within allocated time (hence, the timetable), you will do just fine in medical school.

I think that's it for now. To the Anon who asked this, I hope my humble and personal-opinionated tips and tricks I used in medical school will help you through this. Medical school is never easy, but it doesn't mean you have to be so hard on yourself. So all the best and good luck with your studies!

Malaysian Housemanship 2016

Here is the story of my life so far:

1. Finished the final exams in early June. Waited a week in constant anxiety and much trepidation for the results to come out and on June 16th, I received the good news that I passed the exams.

2. Two weeks later my university released the transcript of study to those who passed the exams. The transcript of study is a document that recorded the results of every exam throughout the academic years and valid as a proof that we have finished the medicine course. Other than the transcript, my university also issued a Dean's letter (that basically tell those who are concerned that yes, this imbecile has passed the medical degree) to be used during the MMC provisional registration later on. I went to JB to collect the transcript and to bring home the remaining half of my possession that I have accumulated in my rented house.

The Last Days

It was a short ceremony, sweet enough but lacking in its lustre. The time my family and I had in Johor was too short, and the tight schedule was made worse by the evil Joyous Asia who won't permit us to use the robe for too long. Adding together that there are so few good pictures of me on that day I feel a little bit disheartened because there will be no more days like it. No one in my family is a good photographer (really, I shouldn't whine about this, astaghfirullah) but overall the whole thing went quite well so alhamdulillah.

The ruined Graduation

The shirt and the pair of slacks are neatly folded on the sofa in the living room. The brand-new pair of black shoes are still in the shoe box. Not the typical shiny black shoes where they go clickity-clack when you walk over the cold hard floor. The soles are thick and they made no noise whatsoever. The tie is ready. The jacket is also ready. Socks? Any two of them in the drawers will do.

The plan is to depart from home after Friday's subuh prayer. That is in two day's time. I think it is quite an ambitious plan, seeing that the five of us will include both of my sisters. If my dad and I are alike in terms of wanting to do everything way too early and hate to be late, my two sisters are the polar opposite. Knowing my big sister especially, I surmised that we will only be able to leave the house by 8 am. If we are lucky.

Marks the day I'm done with school!

Goodbye to you my friends, at last shall we part;

Worry, my trusted fellow who sleeps with me every night,
My companion, Despair, when I drove back from campus or hospital,
Envy, who never lets me look at other people whole-heartedly,
To he who lets me down, Self-hate, I will miss you not.

Fear is what I breathe constantly, and it is suffocating,
At nights when I awake what-ifs are my tears,
My dreams are scarce, my hope is rarer still,
And yet at last my prayers are heard, blessedly answered.

So alhamdulillah, alhamdulillah,
and alhamdulillah,

Today marks the day I'm done with school!

*I have passed the final examination and have been awarded the degree of Bachelor
of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed)

Life tests

Despair comes one after another, despite me telling myself that I did the exam paper reasonably well yesterday. In reality, after the paper ended I was left feeling numbed. The last 10 minutes was spent to answer the report of an ECG. I don't have any real hope of getting it right, so that initially left me with 11 promising correct answers.

Apologies.

It's getting a bit better now, so I've decided to delete the awful blog posts of mine. My first exam is two days away, and the written exams are 6 days away.  *breathes in deeply*

The old and familiar panic button

Quick intro: I am rushing against a deadline for my elective assignment, I'm in my second ESR rotation, and I'm in trouble with MARA. My parents are coming back from Makkah this Wednesday, my grandma is getting discharged from the ward anytime this weekend, and I am feeling miserable with my final year.

I am backwards in my study. I feel restless and stupid. It's hard to find rhythm and tempo in my study. Also, my car is fast becoming an old car. I learnt to change a tire the other day. I haven't wash it in months. Also, I eat a lot now. I spend a lot now. Despite my allowance from MARA is non-existence now, I still feel I am spending the money I borrowed from my sis quite lavishly.

Back to my study. I am really afraid right now. How am I supposed to be a doctor like this? I'm not ready. Everything seems hard and difficult. I can't remember everything. I don't even know what are the things that I shouldn't forget. Also I am still can't decide (shit my grammar went all over the place.) how or where to study effectively. My room is too hot the chair is too low and too stiff I am a chronic user of Internet how la weyh to focus.

My parents still don't know about my MARA allowance situation. It's gonna cause me a massive headache once they freaked out about it. Again, back to my study. I am restless. I have plans on how to tackle this year but it seemed it's going to be so tedious and tiring and long-winded there's a high chance of falling off the wagon or a slip.

So here I am rattling off about my problems. Heck, it's not like there's anyone reading about this. Plus I updated this blog once a month I think it's pretty healthy for me. I really don't have time to type a lot of things here cuz you know final year sucks and scary and terrifying I am fast developing inferior complex towards my juniors (don't ask me why or how I am really insecure about it) I need a big, red panic button to chill my asses off.

Jan 7, 2015

Results are out!

Alhamdulillah, I passed!!

I got 55.6% (the passing mark is 52.79%). So close, isn't it? See, I worked my ass off and although I was rewarded it is still marginally too close for comfort. Now that one BIG obstacle of the academic year is over, it's time to enjoy my SSCs and electives!

Oh, I also have a nazar to fulfill.

Surviving hell

This post is about surviving stage 4 MBBS course in Newcastle University.

I just finished my second and last exam paper today. It was freaking' harder than yesterday's paper, which was already difficult enough that it could make my go bald just from sheer stress. What makes my uni's exams so bloody difficult to pass is that they used Single Best Answer style, also called as Best Of Five. 125 questions over the course of 3 hours are not something that most students can deal lightly, and during exams we have tendencies to think in a way way way so differently than what we normally do like,

Dec 7, 2014

Day -9

9 days left.
I am reconsidering my exam prep as so-so. Not so well-done as I hoped to achieve but not bad either.

I have occupied a big study desk in the library as my temporary settlement (work station). Last week I used to leave home at 7 am and leave at 11 pm. I would come to the library and study. Those were the days.

Health camp at Kampung Sungai Melayu

Hi there,

So there's this program that we, stage 4 students had to organize the other day which is a health camp. This is an annual program designed to make stage 4 students' life more miserable HAHA KIDDING and unlike last year, where they did it in a slightly populated area, this time, on 15th Nov, we did it in a fishing village called Kampung Sungai Melayu.

A seminar to die for?

Let me tell you something that happened to me the other day.

It was not exciting. None of that hospital stuff where medical students (like me) stumbled upon horrible gruesome stuff that makes your eyes widen in horror as you read. Heck, I did not even went to see patients (or dead bodies) this time.

This time I want to tell you about a 2-hour seminar I had that morning.

Forensic autopsy

Today I went to HSI Forensic department to learn more about forensic pathology.

When people talk about forensic, I always think of NCIS (because that is one of my favourite tv shows on Earth). And mehh okay maybe CSI as well but I don't really like CSI as much. Never mind that.

So we gathered inside the seminar room where they do their presentations and the head of forensic pathologist (crap I don't remember her name) came and introduced herself. What I can remember was that there are only 3 pathologists to handle all forensic cases in Johor, which is a really sad thing. Pathologists are highly sought after you know. My lecturer once joked that there are only 2 people who know about what the patient has - one is God and the other is the pathologist. Even when you become a hotshot medical officer working in a ward, you may make a diagnosis based on what you see or examine on the patient but you would still need a pathologist to confirm your diagnosis. Pretty humbling, huh?

A touch of feelings too close to home

This morning my friends and I went to SCOG (Specialty Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynaecology) in order to observe the doctors working there and as well to learn cases from the patients. So we went to find Dr B who is known to be friendly to medical students and he himself is a specialist anyway so it's only proper to tag along his consultations.

What I did not know at that time was that he is a gynaecology oncology specialist, meaning that he is specialized in dealing with cancers of woman's reproductive organs (uterine, cervical, ovarian, etc.). So the first patient that we saw was the one my friend clerked outside in the waiting area. She is an elderly lady, 55 year old I think and already had her menopause 5 years ago. She was internally referred to the specialist by the house officer in the ward of the same hospital because of her post menopausal bleeding.

Plan

So here I am, 90+ days away from final exam.
I just started my 2 week holidays of Easter break and now I am safe and bored at home although I have tonnes of stuff to read and learn over this holiday but as usual I don't have any motivation to start any. It always happen when I am at home. To me, home is where books are kept in the bag and the learning is out of the window. But home is also a place where I don't have my own bed (let alone a bedroom), where Internet connection is capped and slow, and where common cold is so common I don't even realised I had it all day.

I am so bored out of my mind but I am not that kind of person who likes to go outside and wander. Not with my family around, thank you very much because I always feel a bit restricted with them. Plus there's nowhere to go and the only means of transportation at my disposal is one ancient Kancil which my dad strongly discouraged not to drive it outside the outskirts of Kajang. You know what they say about old cars; never drive them across unknown lands and uncharted territories. They can smell fear as your uncertainties of the likelihood of the car to break down gradually rise. And BAM, you car broke down in the middle of nowhere, or worse, in the middle of a busy highway.

So what to do with two weeks of holiday?
  1. Nothing - That seems like a default answer. I have no plans of what to do over this holiday. I sincerely want to cut my holiday short and go to JB a week earlier but seeing that by doing that will increase my rental fee significantly I gave up that thought. Bloody ISV with their incompetence.
  2. Going out meeting friends - That seems nice. I haven't see my friends for quite a while. But as most (or, rather, all!) of them have started working it will be a bit difficult to make a plan for a meet. Plus not all of them are a sight for sore eyes. Some of them are definitely plain sore sights, downward annoying and need to be eradicated or banned from breeding (hahaha joking, jokiiiing) (actually, I'm not.)
  3. Exercise - Pfft buahahaha no no no no no signor no no no. I didn't bring my running shoes and nope, I don't see any good place to run so no no no.
  4. Studying - Hmm yes I will study here and there but that is not exactly what I plan to do for the whole two weeks. No I will not bloody do that no.
  5. Movies - Tempting, but watching alone sucks and I really need to control how I spend my money.
Not such a long list, huh? Oh well, the good thing is I'm back at blogging! It is a bit sad that my friends are not the blogging types. What a bunch of bore. Haha. Or is it that only boring people blog? Hmm.

Bilik saya

Salam sejahtera semua,
Agak lambat sebenarnya sebab aku pun dah hilang feeling berpindah masuk.
Asrama pelajar je sebenarnya, nama je nak gempak. Kalau service gempak gak lain cerita la kan huh. Kenapa? Kerana uni aku, Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) terletak di situ. Ya, Nusajaya. Ala, tempat Legoland tu. Kat Johor.

Ergh. Pergi googlemap kalau taktau lagi.
Okay, kembali ke focus utama post, di sini aku nak tunjuk gambar bilik aku:
DSC01616

Usah khuatir, based on keadaan bilik macam ni korang boleh assume yang bilik air kitorang pun bersih gak. Kenapa? Sebab roommates aku semuanya pembersihhhh. Betul tak tipu. Pintu kanan pulak namanya utility room.

DSC01618
HAHAHA.

DSC01623
Oleh sebab aku malu nak tunjuk so aku pixelate gambar ni.

DSC01619
Utility room. Itu rak kasut aku. Kitorang take turn basuh baju sebab tempat sidai limited. Nak basuh baju ada dobi kat ground floor. RM3 sekali guna satu mesin basuh. Oh btw bilik aku di tingkat 1.

DSC01625
Ini meja aku. Most of the time memang tempat aku berkemas macam ni. Boleh kata 88% la. Selebih masanya tu sebab kadang-kadang aku dilanda rasa malas nak kemas takpun bilik bersepah dengan buku dan kertas.

Eh, apa benda kat tamble lamp tu?
DSC01613
DSC01626
Ni childhood toy aku, okay. Don’t judge my sentimental value.
Okay itu sahaja buat kali ni. So korang nampak tak kenapa aku suka sangat balik bilik bila ada masa lapang? HAHAHA. Lagipun aku dah tak boleh concentrate belajar kat campus so kalau aku nak belajar aku akan study kat sini sahaja.

Sekian, semua.

Bilik sewa uni tahun depan

Salam sejahtera semua,
Horay. Aku tak sempat lagi nak melawat apartment kediaman pelajar tu. Dengar kata bilik-bilik kat situ semuanya kecik-kecik nak mampus. Nak buat camne adatlah kan duduk kat kediaman universiti.. Nak hidup mewah duduk menyewa kat luar la jawabnya.

Kupas kulit bawang pun dah disaster.

HAHA
